about alfizam

The name of the style derives from the nickname Alfi, an abbreviation formed from the artist’s name, Aleksandar Filipović.

The earliest works belong to a period spanning approximately twenty-five years, during which all pieces were created in black and white on heavy drawing paper. Most of these works measure 70 × 100 cm and explore the relationship between man and woman. Later works introduced motifs inspired by medieval frescoes and icons.

It is sometimes rendered with meticulous precision and at other times developed through larger, freer forms.

The white space between the triangles plays an essential role by separating individual elements and creating visual balance. In the earliest works, the background remained white and functioned as an open, unoccupied surface. Over time, it became an increasingly important part of the composition, particularly in the works inspired by Vinča culture.

The name of the style derives from the nickname Alfi, an abbreviation formed from the artist’s name, Aleksandar Filipović.It is not the artist’s role to judge his own work or define the ultimate value of his style. That task belongs to critics, experts and the public.

An authentic visual language has been created and presented for public consideration. The artist’s role is to remain in constant dialogue with reality, with the aim of expressing the principles and identity of ALPHISM as clearly as possible.
